Marcus Catsaras (Marcus Sonoma) is a systematic power market trader & emerging infrastructure investor.
Based in Tokyo, Marcus is the Chief Investment Officer at Stepchange, where he leads trading strategies that integrate machine learning, statistical models and fundamental analysis with its partner firms' proprietary trading algorithms. Stepchange models physical grids, weather, optimizes battery operations, and examines the interplay between market dynamics and real-world energy demands.
Marcus also heads Aethra, a multi-asset emerging infrastructure fund dedicated to critical energy transition projects that bridge the gap between pilot deployment and their large-scale deploy. Aethra’s portfolio includes ventures such as Terraform Industries, Carbonaught, Lower Carbon Capital, Planeteer Capital, and the Infradebt Battery Fund, each making significant contributions to a more sustainable future. This work organically stemmed from his three part youtube series in 2022 around the benefits and challenges of Carbon Removal.
Outside his professional roles, Marcus is actively involved in initiatives like Climate200 and the Sydney University Net Zero Initiative, underscoring his commitment to addressing the critical challenges of the energy transition.
A graduate of Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and Berklee College of Music, Marcus plays classical piano and produces electronic music, particularly when he occasions his favorite music studio on the beautiful central coast of Australia.
