Marcus Catsaras is an investor and systematic trader focused on climate technology and mispricings in energy markets. He identifies and supports critical first-of-a-kind (FOAK) climate projects that advance decarbonization and clean energy infrastructure. In trading, Marcus develops and implements systematic strategies to navigate complex markets, balancing profitability with tangible impact.
Based in Tokyo, Marcus is the Chief Investment Officer at Stepchange, where he leads trading strategi that integrate machine learning, statistical models, and fundamental analysis. Stepchange models physical grids, weather, optimizes battery operations, and examines the interplay between market dynamics and real-world energy systems.
Marcus also heads Aethra, a multi-asset climate tech fund dedicated to FOAK Projects that bridge the gap between innovative concepts and large-scale deployment. Aethra’s portfolio includes ventures such as Terraform Industries, Carbonaught, Lower Carbon Capital, Planeteer Capital, and the Infradebt Battery Fund, each making significant contributions to a more sustainable future.
Outside his professional roles, Marcus is actively involved in initiatives like Climate200 and the Sydney University Net Zero Initiative, underscoring his commitment to addressing the critical challenges of the energy transition.
A graduate of Berklee College of Music and student of Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Marcus periodically plays classical piano, produces electronic music and writes orchestral music from, particularly when he occasions his favorite music studio on the beautiful central coast of Australia.
